Every morning, ten shops in Devon open their doors with one mission in mind: making the best handmade fudge possible.
Roly’s Fudge, based in Devon, is a franchise with nearly 50 shops spread across the country. First founded in the 1980s, in a farmhouse kitchen in Mid Devon, it has now spread throughout the country. Every day, in full view of our customers, each shop begins the process of cooking real butter, milk and sugar to make this crumbly fudge.
Made in our signature copper pans using a traditional recipe, the mixture is poured out onto a large marble table. After stirring with a paddle, helping it to cool quickly, the fudge is carefully formed into a baguette shape. As it begins to set, it is sliced into large slabs and then into handmade chunks, ready to eat.
Roly’s Fudge bears no resemblance to factory produced fudge; it has a texture which is often surprising to customers at first who are used to sticky machine made toffee and fudge. “It’s crumbly!”, were the words exclaimed by many customers who tried it for the first time, which saw the birth of this slogan for the company and which is still uttered across the country every day. It melts in your mouth.
This traditional, handmade fudge is often experienced by the first time by holiday makers coming to Devon or to other tourist cities and towns across the country, looking for a slab of the West Country to take away with them. For many customers at Roly’s Fudge, the product has become synonymous with childhood memories spent in Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Totnes and Torbay.
Many of the Roly’s franchisees wanted to open a shop for this very reason, excited by the dream of opening and running their very own handmade fudge pantry.

Roly’s Fudge was founded in 1987 in the farmhouse kitchen of Peter and Lindsey Riley’s 16th century thatched cottage in Mid Devon. The business developed into a franchising company in the 1990s and since then has been dedicated to bringing the best of traditional, crumbly fudge to the whole of the country and beyond. Starting with a handful of shops in the West Country, in the past ten years, Roly’s Fudge has spread across England, with shops as as York and the Lake District.
